ABOUT ANN UUSOJA...The Estonian Canadian artist uses silk as a favourite medium because of its intense response to colour, its fluidity and because it is a powerful medium which provides a sensuous way of adornment appealing to a wider audience. The paintings can be hung on a wall or worn as wearable art.
Symbols play an important role in her imagery. Not only do they stimulate the imagination, but they transcend time, language, and culture. Communication is made possible by the universality of symbols. This scarf is no exception, with its modern interpretation of ancient tribal motifs ( the tiger man ) and symbols and a unique interplay of vivid and dull color palette. The bold juxtaposition and strong linear composition evokes ancestral primitive memories. It is this particular quality the artist hopes will bring into our consciousness a long lost belief system that revered the Mother Earth as a sacred body and treated her with respect., and of the perfect symbiosis of man and animal as seen through the mind of ancestral man.
I can't imagine a more appropriate metaphor for our troubled modern times where reclaiming our reverence for nature is becoming an imperative.
The symbols in this silk painting combine primitive or naive shapes with bold color to convey the metaphor behind the image. Like ancient paintings on wall caves, the Tiger Man central figure is the equalizer, the main life or spiritual force for the other figures. The silhouettes in "flight" are very reminiscent of the fantastic fantasies of Chagall...in an ethnic interpretation.
AUTHENTIC, SIGNED, created by the artist in the 1990's, acquired by yours truly from the National Gallery exhibit.
