A BIT OF TRIVIA...for those of you who never heard of the label.
Alfred Shaheen was one of the most prolific Hawaiian hand painted/printed textile producers and artists in the heyday of the 50's and 60's. His designs and painted textiles are legendary, drawing inspiration from both the rich Hawaiian culture, the South Pacific and Asia. His hand painted fabrics are now RARE and highly collectible pieces. And they are considered the epitome of exotic vintage Hawaiian prints, rare to come by and highly sought after.
On the official Shaheen site, there is only one other print dated from the mid 50's (in red and quite different) offered as an exclusive at over $1500...,
The caftan dress I am offering is poetry on canvas.
Painted on nubby yet lightweight soft linen, the vertical grid showcases white jasmin? flowers and buds on dark brown branches, a definite echo of the Japanese sakura motifs. Like a painted haiku poem, if you will.
THE DRESS/CAFTAN IS HOME/TAYLOR MADE FROM ONE PIECE OF SHAHEEN SIGNED FABRIC which was not cut too much to preserve the integrity of the fabric (can be undone and used for other purposes, wall dressing perhaps?). The design is identical on both front and back, with a simple straight, boxy cut and kimono cap sleeves, in order to preserve the entire piece of this rare fabric.
In some pictures I wrapped a piece of brown silk around the waist as a sash or obi to emphasize the Japanese flair of the print. The silk sash in not included in the auction. The dress has a boatneck and the sides have been folded inside not cut to preserve the fabric. Slits on both sides.
*SHAHEEN*...signed on print both on front and back.
COLOR: soft cream background with white and brown floral.
FABRIC:no indication, it appears to be a linen or linen/cotton combo. Has a shantung like texture. The brown appears to be woven in the fabric but the white flowers are painted ON the fabric, so this is not a print but an original hand painting.
SIZE: the straight lines of this short caftan will accommodate any size up to a 45" bust. However, if needed, there is fabric tucked in on the sides to allow for remodeling . 39" long with another 5 in the hem.
CONDITION: ABSOLUTELY IMPECCABLE! I am not sure you will find a second original in this remarkable condition. It has never been worn.
RARE PRINT, RARE VINTAGE, UNIQUE IN EVERY WAY, HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE AND EXOTIC.
FREE shipping in Canada and the USA.
International rates available, please inquire prior to checkout.
