From JEAN PATOU, the eccentric, visionary French Perfumier, the creator of JOY, the most expensive perfume in the world, comes the design of this superb black wool cropped fitted couture opera jacket with full pelt black mink collar and cuffs, a spectacular little luxury vintage jacket for a lady with a penchant for the absolute best, rare couture and museum pieces. A mirror of the elegant 50s, we would imagine it worn by Marilyn Monroe (there is an actual archive photograph of Marylin Monroe wearing an identical jacket while embarking on a plane with her husband, Joe di Maggio), Grace Kelly or Lauren Bacall.

The history behind the piece...
Jean Patou' s exclusive couture designs were mainly destined for the very rich American socialites up until the crash in the 30's when the good habit of importing his designs disappeared in the dark economic realities of the time. Subsequently, the patterns of his designs and the right to use them ONCE were purchased exclusively either by famous tailors or private clients who could afford them at very high prices and created by reputable tailors (not in Paris) and sold at Paris couture prices. Hence the very few Patou pieces in existence especially on the North American continent are labelled "reproduction" or "adaptation" (remember, the right to produce one piece after the drawing was purchased, not the right to produce en masse).
It was a mandatory condition in most cases that together with the right to create the garment, the exact fabrics and trimmings were ordered and purchased from Paris so that the "reproduction" was an exact and faithful representation of the drawing and the vision behind it.
Why would they do that? The advantage was in having a uniquely tailored couture Patou Parisian garment without the boat ride to France in uncertain post-war times.
And voila! Here we have one of these exceptional garments!

The tailoring of this little black jacket is exquisite and mirrors the elegant 50s. Simplicity and class are evident in the shorter, cropped and slightly fitted body, the double breasted front for a bit of a simetry and the 3/4 sleeves just asking for 3/4 or long gloves. The black, shiny mink collar elegantly frames the neck and face. A thick, slightly ribbed handspun wool fabric adds warmth and the heavy satin lining completes it. The near black natural female mink full pelt collar and cuffs framing the face and neck give it that subdued elegance of worlds long gone and speaks volumes.
Meant as a daytime jacket, it could very well be worn as a cocktail /afternoon jacket or even an opera little coat. Our modern dress codes have simplified our lives and also, if you ask me, took some of the feminine mystery out of it. Fabric covered buttons, raglan sleeve cut. ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLE CONDITION! And I do not exaggerate, it is perfect in every way, like new! And it IS a true vintage 50s garment.
FUR ...is extremely glossy and supple and with absolutely NO damage, hair guard or wear. Naturally VERY dark colour pelts, it is black with mahogany undertones, most visible in the collar. Cuffs are from one single pelt each, 2" wide and frame the cuff of a shorter (3/4 or longer) sleeve. Remember, the jacket is meant to be worn with longer gloves.
SIZE...would fit a bust of 38" maximum, measured on the outside (size estimated as 6 in today's sizing)
Waist - 34"
Hips- 38"
Length - 22.5"
Sleeve length - 24" measured from neck across shoulder including mink cuff
A rarissim garment and in immaculate condition, it has been in my family for a few generations now and extremely well cared for. NOTE, that some pictures have been lightened to showcase the details of the cut and style. The actual garment is BLACK, with absolutely NO discoloration or fading anywhere.
Who will be the woman to fall in love with this true couture Jean Patou piece?
I will consider serious offers.
