Absolute elegance in this vintage flowing, flawless, luminous soleil pleated maxi skirt from the 70s, a figure flattering, romantic even skirt equally suitable for boots and mink jackets, as it is with high heels and silk camisoles for a more formal occasion.
TRIVIA and History about the Soleil Pleating
The medium weight of the crepe fabric with a body, allows for the soleil pleated cut to flow and open graciously with every step. The beauty of this cut is really unparalleled. Even though the technique dates from a few centuries back having been used to delicately pleat elaborate silk and lace wide and high collars of court gowns, it has been resurrected both in the 50s when circle skirts were en vogue and again in the 70s.
The technique/style is called Soleil (Sunburst) Bias Pleating and the term soleil is still used currently in high fashion designer circles.
This kind of pleating is applied to bias cut fabrics and keeps the waist and below the waist portion close to the body, opening right around the hip area, with maximum amplitude in the lower skirt and hem. It is very figure flattering, slimming the waist and hip area.
This is one of those beautiful, flowing skirts, in a soft light beige/cream color, hard to capture and describe.
No designer labels or provenance, it looks like a very high end skirt, judging by the style, cut and especially the fabric.
COLOR: as seen in photos, very light cream/ivory/beige.
FABRIC: no indication. The fabric is crepe, has that grain texture, but it is fine in the same time, weight heavier but not bulky and thick. Falls superbly. Could be a silk/wool mix, possibly with some synthetic but not elastene, the fabric is not stretching. NO LINING.
Size: no label, estimated at medium or 8-10 for a waist of 29-30". The hip area is already larger due to the bias of the fabric, accommodating a range of hips. The skirt is 35" long.
CONDITION: just pristine, appears to be new, never worn old stock. Condition, style, color, all are really superb.
